Wentworth has enthralled viewers and critics alike since its debut in 2013, with its well-written characters, spot-on casting and dramatic, atmospheric direction. We’re glad to say season 9 is just around the corner.
The TV drama series is set in Australia and first aired on SoHo on May 1, 2013. The series is a new reimagining of Network Ten’s Prisoner, which aired from 1979 to 1986. Wentworth was created by Lara Radulovich and David Hannam based on Reg Watson’s initial concept. The series is set in the present day and follows Bea Smith (Danielle Cormack) from her early days in jail to her climb to the top of the prison’s hierarchy.
The show has been highly praised by critics throughout its run, and has received many awards and nominations. The series has been nominated for 24 Logie Awards and has won seven of them. The show has also been nominated for and won awards from the AACTA Awards, ASTRA Awards, Australian Directors Guild Awards, and Australian Writers Guild Awards, as well as nominations from the Australian Screen Editors and the Equity Awards. Wentworth’s Rotten Tomatoes rating currently stands at a 95% average audience score.
Wentworth Season 9: Release Date
Fortunately, since season nine of Wentworth has already finished production, the coronavirus won’t be causing any delays. For now, we expect the series will debut in Australia in summer 2021, followed by a Netflix release somewhere between late June and September 2021.
With the exception of Canada, which will see season nine release a bit later, the rest of the world should get its debut at the same time as the US. Unfortunately, Wentworth most likely won’t be available on Netflix in other countries. If previous seasons of Wentworth aren’t already available, season nine most likely won’t be either.

The lead cast is expected to return with Kate Atkinson playing Vera Bennett, Robbie J. Magasiva playing Will Jackson, Katrina Milosevic playing Susan Jenkins (a.k.a. Boomer), Kate Jenkinson playing Allie Novak, Bernard Curry playing Jake Stewart, Leah Purcell playing Rita Connors, Susie Porter playing Marie Winter, and Rarriwuy Hick playing Ruby Mitchell.
