Along for the Ride, based on the YA novel of the same name by New York Times bestselling author Sarah Dessen, will be adapted and directed by Sofia Alvarez. Dessen’s books have been translated into 35 languages and have sold over 10 million copies worldwide. Along for the Ride won the Goodreads Choice Award for Best Young Adult Fiction.

The filming of the movie began in April in the Carolina Beach region of North Carolina. According to the Port City Daily, the production is scheduled to travel mostly out of Carolina Beach to film scenes in Wilmington and Oak Island after Memorial Day.

The storyline is set in the summer before college. Auden meets the mysterious Eli, a fellow insomniac. While the seaside town of Colby sleeps, the two embark on a nightly quest to help Auden experience the fun, carefree teen life she never knew she wanted. 

Along For The Ride Cast Announced

The main and supporting casts for the film have been confirmed by Netflix. The film will feature Emma Pasarow, who will be seen in Dakota Johnson’s upcoming film Am I OK?, and Belmont Cameli, who will play Jamie Spano in Peacock’s Saved by the Bell reboot. Laura Kariuki, Genevieve Hannelius, Samia Finnerty, Paul Karmiyran, Marcus Scribner, and Ricardo Hurtado join Bosworth, MacDowell, and Mulroney, as well as Laura Kariuki, Genevieve Hannelius, Samia Finnerty, Paul Karmiyran, Marcus Scribner, and Ricardo Hurtado.

Sofia Alvarez Returns To Netflix With Directorial Debut

Netflix also confirmed Sofa Alvarez would be directing the film. Sofia grew up in Baltimore, Maryland. She is the daughter of Deborah Rudacille, an American science scholar, and Rafael Alvarez, a former Baltimore Sun reporter and writer for The Wire. Prior to completing The Juilliard School’s Playwriting Program, she attended Bennington College in Bennington, Vermont.

Life Drawing, The Fish Bowl, NYLON, Friend Art (Second Stage Theater, 2016), The Orphan’s Club, Corpse Pose, and LODGE are among Alvarez’s plays. In 2018, South Coast Repertory debuted her musical adaptation of William Steig’s classic children’s book Amos & Boris.

Although Along For The Ride will be Sofia’s directorial debut, she is no stranger to Netflix adpatations. In 2018, she wrote an adaptation of Jenny Han’s bestselling novel To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. Its sequel, To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You, premiered on February 12, 2020.

Screen Arcade’s Alyssa Rodrigues, Sian McArthur, and Erika Hampson have joined the Netflix team as Executive Producers along with Producers Screen Arcade’s Bryan Unkeless and Eric Newman.
