The Umbrella Academy is an American superhero television series that premiered on February 15, 2019, and has recently wrapped production for its third season. The series was created by Steve Blackman for Netflix, and is being developed by Jeremy Slater and his team. The original The Umbrella Academy, a comic book series authored by Gerard Way with the same name, serves as a major inspiration for the show. So far, two seasons of the show have aired on Netflix, and fans are impatiently awaiting the release of the third.

The Umbrella Academy Season 3

Both seasons one and two of the series have been well received by viewers and critics alike. Within the first month of its release, the series had been viewed by over 45 million viewers on Netflix, with viewers watching at least 70% of at least one episode. In 2019, it was the third most popular TV show on Netflix. Following the second season premiere, the show shattered multiple viewing records. The show topped the Nielsen ratings during the first week of the second season, with 3 billion minutes of the show’s two seasons being watched. According to Nielsen statistics, the program’s second season was streamed by nearly 43 million people in its first 28 days, making it the sixth most viewed show of that year. The series has also been nominated for several awards throughout 2019 to 2021, and currently holds a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes for season two and 76% rating for season one.

The Umbrella Academy Season 3: Release Date

Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy was confirmed in an announcement made by Netflix in November of 2022. The long-awaited season 3 will be released on Wednesday, June 22 on the streaming service. The announcement was made by showrunner Steve Blackman during the SXSW conference in Austin. Production of the 10-episode third season began in February in Toronto. Season 3 executive producers include Jeff F. King (who also directs), Mike Richardson, Keith Goldberg, and Jesse McKeown, in addition to Blackman. Way and Bá serve as co-executive producers.

The Umbrella Academy Season 3: Cast Confirmed

The Hargreeves family — Elliot Page as Vanya, Tom Hopper as Luther, David Castaeda as Diego, Emmy Raver-Lampman as Allison, Robert Sheehan as Klaus, and Aiden Gallagher as Number Five — will all return for the third season, as will Colm Feore as Sir Reginald and Season 2 addition Ritu Arya as Lila.

Justin H. Min (as a “Machiavellian” version of Ben), Justin Cornwell (Training Day), Britne Oldford (The Flash), Jake Epstein (Degrassi: The Next Generation), Genesis Rodriguez (Time After Time), Cazzie David (Eighty-Sixed miniseries), and Dread-Inducing Psykronium Cube (TV “newcomer”) will play the season 3 Sparrows. Javon Walton has also revealed he joined the cast in an undisclosed role for the third season.

The Umbrella Academy Season 3: Plot Expectations

According to the official season 3 synopsis, the Hargreeves will face the following challenges:

“Smart, stylish, and about as warm as a sea of icebergs, the Sparrows immediately clash with the Umbrellas in a violent face-off that turns out to be the least of everyone’s concerns. Navigating challenges, losses and surprises of their own — and dealing with an unidentified destructive entity wreaking havoc in the Universe (something they may have caused) — now all they need to do is convince Dad’s new and possibly better family to help them put right what their arrival made wrong. Will they find a way back to their pre-apocalyptic lives? Or is this new world about to reveal more than just a hiccup in the timeline?”
